Las Vegas poker rooms closing for good

Three Las Vegas poker rooms that were temporary closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic will now be shuttered for good.

Three MGM Las Vegas properties, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay and The Mirage will not reopen their closed poker rooms. The rooms weren’t very large, holding between seven and 12 tables each, but it continues an ongoing trend of live poker rooms in Las Vegas going dark.

According to reports, prior to the pandemic in February Las Vegas had approximately 34 poker room with around 430 tables. Following the latest closures at the MGM properties those numbers have shrunk to 21 poker rooms and 285 tables.

Does online poker boom again with Las Vegas poker rooms closing?

The closure of the three poker rooms means something must be done with the money held for bad beat jackpots at all three venues. According to Nevada gaming regulations the money in the bad beat jackpots belongs to the players, not the casino, and must be distributed back to players somehow. To do this MGM is running a freeroll tournament series.

The freeroll series will be held at the MGM Grand poker room which reopened in July. Three tournaments have been scheduled with a different bad beat jackpot up for grabs in each tournament

Unfortunately, if you haven’t already signed up for the first freeroll you’ve missed out. It runs at the MGM Grand today, Tuesday, November 3 and registration has sold out. On the line in the first freeroll is the Mandalay Bay bad beat jackpot which is worth $24,022.

The second freeroll will be held at the MGM Grand on Tuesday, November 17. Registration begins on November 11 at 5 p.m. local time. This freeroll will be for the Mirage bad beat jackpot which is valued at $69,804.

The final freeroll is scheduled for Tuesday, December 1 at the MGM Grand. Registration opens on November 25. The Excalibur bad beat jackpot, valued at $27,837, will be up for grabs.

The option remains for players at US poker sites to venture to old faithful rooms such as Ignition and BetOnline Poker for  their action.
