Tilston wins U.S. Poker Open main event, Chidwick crowned series champion

Poker’s best gathered at the Aria Casino in Las Vegas last week for the U.S. Poker Open, a series of eight big-money tournaments. The main event was a $50,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament. Only 33 players put up the big money to play, and in the end the last man standing was poker pro Keith Tilston.

For the win Tilston cashed $660,000. That was his fourth cash of the event, which earned him a total of just over $1 million. That nearly doubled his lifetime live-poker earnings, which according to the Hendon Mob now sit at $2.2 million.

In the main event it came down to Tilston and Jake Schindler heads-up for the tournament title. In the final hand Schindler was sent packing after what turned out to be an ill-advised bluff. Tilston was dealt Kh-4h on the final hand, while Schindler stared down at 8s-7h. The flop – Ah-9h-6s – gave Tilston a nut flush draw and Schindler an open-ended straight draw. The turn card – 2c – didn’t help either player. The river – 2h – gave Tilston his flush, and he quickly called when Schindler bluffed all-in. For second place, Schindler received $429,000.

Chidwick named U.S. Poker Open champion

While Tilston won the main event, Stephen Chidwick was named U.S. Poker Open champion after dominating the series and winning the most money. Chidwick won two tournaments in the series and posted five cashes.

His first win came in event No. 3, the $25,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament. He outlasted a 44-player field to win $374,000. He followed that up by winning event No. 4, the $25,000 Mixed Game tournament. He topped a 45-player field to cash $382,500.

Chidwick also finished fifth in event No. 1, the $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament, third in event No. 6, the $25,000 No-Limit, and seventh in event No. 7, another $25,000 No-Limit Hold’em tournament. The combined total for his five cashes was $1,256,650. That bumped up Chidwick’s lifetime live-poker earnings to $11.2 million.
