Maxime Heroux wins WPT Montreal main event

The WPT has crowned their latest main event champion after Maxime Heroux was the last man standing in the WPT Montreal main event at the Playground Poker Club.

Heroux faced a 606-player field in the $3,850 CDN No-Limit Hold’em tournament. That amassed a prize pool of $2,057,370 CDN. For the win Heroux cashed out $403,570 CDN. The Canadian dollars are fine for the Montreal native, but for anyone wondering how much that was in US dollars at the time, it came to $311,717.

The final table at WPT Montreal included one former WPT champion and five other players, including Heroux, looking for their first WPT title. The lone player looking for a repeat win was Eric Afriat. He previously won the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown main event in 2014, but continues to search for his second win after getting bounced in fifth place in Montreal, which earned him $73,664 US.

Before Afriat’s exit the first player sent to the rail was David Peters. He cashed $60,286 US for sixth place. He was followed by Afriat in fifth and Brendan Baksh in fourth. Baksh recorded his first WPT cash, worth $96,017 US. Third place went to Derek Wolters, who took home $133,795 US.

Heads-up battle at WPT Montreal

It came down to Heroux and Pat Quinn heads-up for the tournament title. Quinn, from Toronto, was looking for his first WPT title after posting his first WPT cash at the WPT Borgata Poker Open earlier this year.

When heads-up play began Heroux had a massive chip lead, with 14.6 million chips to Quinn’s 3.5 million. Quinn limped along with his small stack taking a few pots, but never came close to challenging Heroux’s chip lead.

On the final hand of the tournament with the flop showing 6d-5d-4c Quinn moved all-in following a check from Heroux. Heroux made the call and showed 4d-2d, giving him a pair of fours along with a straight-flush draw. Quinn showed 9d-7s giving him two over cards and a straight draw.

The turn card was the 2s giving Heroux two pair and limiting Quinn’s outs to a non-diamond three or eight. The river was the 2c giving Heroux a full house and the win. For second place Quinn received $271,030 CDN, or $209,344 US.

The next stop for the WPT is the Bellagio in Las Vegas for the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic. The main event with a $10,400 buy-in begins December 5.
