Jay Lee Wins WPT Choctaw Main Event

Jay Lee is the newest WPT champion after he conquered the rest of the 924-player field in the WPT Choctaw Main Event.

The $3,700 No-Limit Hold’em tournament began earlier this week at the Choctaw Casino Resort in Durant, Oklahoma. The large entry listed easily topped the $2 million guaranteed prize pool, with $3,121,980 up for grabs.

Lee, a 27-year-old Chinese food delivery driver from Austin, Texas recorded his first WPT title and cashed $593,173 for the win. That was by far the biggest win of his poker career, easily topping his largest victory in the 2016 World Series of Poker Millionaire Maker. In that tournament he finished 147th to claim $7,589.

When Lee sat down at the six-player final table on the final day of the tournament he was third in chips, but grinded it out to steadily move up the chip count. It came down to Lee and Jeb Hutton heads-up for the tournament title.

Lee and Hutton Heads-up for the Title

When heads-up play began Lee held the chip lead with 16.65 million, compared to 10.95 million chips for Hutton. The heads-up portion was a short one and lasted only 10 hands before Lee sent Hutton to the rail.

On the final hand Hutton put in a pre-flop raise just over double the big blind which Lee called. The flopped showed Jack-Diamonds, 4-Diamonds, 4-Clubs. Both players checked around and the turn showed 7-Spades. Another round of checking followed which brought a 9-Diamonds on the river. Lee came out betting, laying a bet triple the big blind. Hutton followed with a raise more than double Lee’s original bet, but Lee quickly countered with re-raise all-in.

Hutton made the call and showed Queen-Diamonds, 2-Diamonds for a Queen-high flush. Lee turned over Jack-Hearts, 4-Hearts. He had nailed a Full House on the flop and eliminated Hutton with the monster hand. For his second-place finish Hutton collected $366,895.

Along with the WPT title and the nearly $600,000 payday Lee also receives entry into the WPT Tournament of Champions later this season. The next main tour event in Season 16 of the WPT is the WPT Legends of Poker. It is scheduled to run from August 25-31 at the Bicycle Hotel & Casino in Bell Gardens, California.
