Dumont wins EPT Monte Carlo main event

Nicolas Dumont, a driving instructor from Paris, France, rolled into the EPT Monte Carlo main event as a relative unknown last week. He drove out of Monte Carlo a European Poker Tour champion.

Dumont outlasted a 777-player field to post his first live poker tournament win. The win gave his poker bankroll a major boost as he cashed $854,400. Before his EPT win, he had posted a few small cashes that had netted him just over $20,000.

To post his first tournament win, Dumont had to survive an impressive final table that included former Card Player Player of the Year David Peters, EPT champion Patrik Antonius and World Poker Tour champion Ole Schemion. None of those big names made it to heads-up play against Dumont as Schemion was the first to go, in eighth place, Antonius bowed out in sixth place and Peters was sent packing in fourth place.

Dumont vs Jiang heads-up

When only two players remained, it came down to Dumont and New Zealand’s Honglin Jiang heads-up for the tournament. Jiang was in line for his second six-figure cash in three weeks after finishing ninth in the partypoker Millions Grand Final Barcelona main event just last month to pocket $185,000.

When heads-up play began, Jiang held a small chip lead with 13.4 million chips to Dumont’s 9.8 million. That chip lead didn’t last long, as Dumont battled back and retook the lead less than 20 hands later.

After taking over the chip lead, it wasn’t long before all the chips found their way to Dumont. On the final hand of the tournament following a number of pre-flop raises from both players, Jiang moved all-in and Dumont made a quick call. Dumont showed pocket queens and was in a great position when Jiang showed pocket sixes. The flop was a dud for Jiang after it showed Kc-7d-3d. The turn card also provided no help when it showed the 8h. Needing a six on the river to survive, Jiang’s prayers were not answered as the river was the 3s, eliminating him. For second place, he received $520,800.

The EPT takes a lengthy break before its next tournament, the EPT Barcelona. It takes place at the Casino Barcelona from August 21 to September 2.
